ASABA/Nigeria: The Aniocha-Oshimili Elders’ Association, popularly known as Izu Ikei, has thrown its weight behind Senator Ned Nwoko’s agitation for the creation of Anioma State, describing it as a long-standing and legitimate demand of the people.
The Chairman of the association, Prince Sir Clement Okonjo, made the declaration in Asaba at the weekend during an event organised by the socio-cultural group. He said the elders were united in their support for Senator Nwoko, whom he described as a consistent voice for Anioma State over the years.
“We want Anioma State and we have made our position clear to the person pushing for it,” Okonjo stated. “Let me make it known that Ned Nwoko didn’t just start this agitation today. It has been part of his political journey since his days in the House of Representatives.”
He recalled that the creation of Delta State in 1991 and the choice of Asaba as the state capital generated controversy, particularly from some groups who felt their part of the state had been sidelined. According to him, Nwoko’s commitment to the Anioma cause dates back to that period.
“When the agitation became intense, I was invited by the then editor of The Guardian newspaper, who is from Ibusa, to respond to a provocative article written by a prominent son of another ethnic extraction. My reaction was published, and Senator Nwoko saw it. He later invited me to Lagos, and from there, the movement gained momentum. What we are seeing today is the continuation of that struggle, not a new one,” Okonjo said.
He dismissed concerns over whether the proposed Anioma State should fall under the South-East or South-South geopolitical zones, stressing that what mattered most was the creation of the state itself.
“Let us have the state first. With our human and natural resources, we are not moving anywhere. The Federal Character principle will guarantee us a governor, three senators, House of Representatives members, state legislators, councillors, political appointees, and numerous job opportunities. We will also receive our allocation directly from FAAC. These are the realities,” he said.
Prince Okonjo also took a swipe at some Anioma sons who, despite having opportunities in the past to champion the cause, allegedly failed to do so and are now opposing the renewed agitation.
“We in Izu Ikei are solidly behind Senator Nwoko. Those who don’t want Anioma State can relocate to wherever they like. As for us, we want Anioma State and we are prepared to remain here and fight for it. Period,” he declared.
