UGHELLI/Nigeria: In a strong demonstration of compassion and commitment to inclusive care, the Wife of the Governor of Delta State and Founder of the You Matter Charity Foundation, Her Excellency Deaconess Tobore Oborevwori, on Thursday, November 27, 2025, launched a free medical outreach for children with special needs and their caregivers in Ughelli, Delta Central. The event featured the donation of free medication, wheelchairs, mobility aids, and a wide range of assistive and educational devices.

The outreach, organised by the You Matter Charity Foundation in partnership with the Delta State Ministry of Health and the Delta State Primary Health Care Development Agency, provided medical check-ups, nutrition counselling, disability support services, and various interventions designed to improve independence, access to care, and overall well-being.

Addressing parents and caregivers, Deaconess Oborevwori made a heartfelt appeal against the long-standing practice of hiding children with special needs, describing it as damaging and rooted in misinformation. She emphasised the importance of visibility, compassion, and proper care for all children.

“It is not their fault. Every child deserves love, dignity, and the opportunity to thrive,” she said, expressing concern about the stigma associated with Autism and other developmental conditions. She noted that many affected children are denied education and medical attention due to fear of judgment.

“Autistic people are everyday people who live among us. Autism is not a spiritual problem or an illness looking for a cure. It is a condition that can be managed with understanding, compassion, and the right professional support,” she added.

She explained that the statewide outreach was designed not only to deliver medical and social support but also to counter misinformation, promote early intervention, and encourage parents to seek help without fear. Her Excellency reaffirmed her Foundation’s commitment to advocating for children with special needs and urged families, community leaders, and institutions to unite in building a more inclusive Delta State.

Delivering a health lecture during the event, Dr. Ifeoma Udeh, Consultant Paediatrician at Asaba Specialist Hospital, warned that nearly 50 percent of Nigerian children suffer micronutrient deficiencies due to economic hardship, poor feeding habits, and cultural practices. She stressed the importance of exclusive breastfeeding and proper early nutrition.

Also speaking, Dr. Bolum-Okolie Angela, Consultant Paediatric Cardiologist, reinforced the First Lady’s message, urging parents to prioritise education, healthcare, and emotional support for children with disabilities. She noted that early diagnosis and intervention significantly improve long-term outcomes.

Medical personnel were on ground to carry out examinations and provide professional guidance, as the outreach advanced the Foundation’s mission of delivering hope, visibility, and essential care to special-needs children across Delta State.
