ASABA/Nigeria: Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State is set to launch a major rural infrastructure project with the groundbreaking ceremony for the N29.8 billion Aboh–Akarai Road and bridge across the Okiri River in Ndokwa East Local Government Area, in what officials describe as a strategic move to boost connectivity in riverine communities.
The ceremony, scheduled for Wednesday, May 6, 2026, signals the commencement of an 11-kilometre road project designed to improve access and stimulate economic activity across the Ndokwa East corridor, according to the Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu.
Aniagwu, who disclosed details of the project in Asaba, said the Aboh–Akarai Road, including the bridge over the Okiri River, forms part of a wider infrastructure rollout targeted at the Ndokwa/Ukwuani Federal Constituency.
He noted that the project reflects the administration’s focus on extending development to underserved rural and riverine areas, where access challenges have historically limited economic growth and mobility.
The commissioner added that several complementary road projects have also been lined up within the constituency to strengthen the region’s transport network and support long-term development.
Among the projects listed are the Inam–Abbi Road, Ogbedigbo–Afor Road, Ebendo–Iyasele–Abala Road, and the Ogbe-Ogume–Ebendo Road (Phase 1).
Others include the access road to the Kwale Free Trade Zone, Utage–Uno/Eweshi Utagba-Uno Road, Ushie Township Roads, and the Amai–Aragba Road in Ukwuani Local Government Area.
Aniagwu explained that the infrastructure drive is expected to unlock economic opportunities, enhance trade, and improve the movement of goods and people within the affected communities.
He further stated that the projects would contribute to reducing travel time, improving safety, and fostering greater integration between rural settlements and urban centres.
The groundbreaking ceremony is expected to draw top government functionaries, traditional rulers, community leaders and residents from across Ndokwa East and neighbouring areas, marking what many see as a significant milestone in the state’s rural development agenda
