Anti-Okowa Sentiment Grows in Ndokwa East as 2027 Politics Heats Up in Delta North

KWALE/Nigeria: A fresh wave of political agitation is gathering momentum in Ndokwa East Local Government Area, as influential voices within the community move to challenge the long-standing dominance of former Governor of Delta State and Senator, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, in the politics of Delta North Senatorial District.

The agitation, crystallised in a widely circulated poster declaring that “Ndokwa Federal Constituency is not Ekwueme’s personal property,” is being interpreted by political observers as an open revolt against what many describe as Okowa’s entrenched godfather role in the zone. “Ekwueme,” a popular nickname associated with the former governor, has for years symbolised the commanding influence he wields over electoral outcomes and key political appointments, particularly in Ndokwa/Ukwuani Federal Constituency.

For decades, Okowa has remained the undisputed political rallying point in Delta North, with aspirants across party lines often seeking his endorsement before venturing into elections or lobbying for appointments. In Ndokwa and Ukwuani axis, his perceived role as the final arbiter of political destiny has drawn both loyalty and quiet resentment, especially among younger politicians and community leaders who believe the constituency has remained underrepresented despite repeated cycles of “anointed” candidates.

The new campaign emerging from Ndokwa East, identified in the poster by the reference to NELGA, appears to signal a deliberate attempt to dismantle that influence ahead of the 2027 general elections. The language of the message is unusually direct, accusing the political establishment of imposing “misrepresentation” on the people and warning that “Ekwueme will not be the only Senate option for 2027.”

Beyond the rhetoric lies a deeper frustration rooted in development concerns. The poster’s reference to “huge economic development deficits” reflects a growing sentiment that the constituency has not derived proportional benefits from its proximity to power, despite producing top political figures over the years. Community sources say the agitation is driven by a coalition of political actors, youth leaders and opinion moulders who are determined to reclaim what they describe as the people’s right to freely choose their representatives without external imposition.

Political analysts see the development as an early sign of a potentially bruising contest in Delta North, where succession politics is expected to dominate conversations as 2027 approaches. While Okowa has not publicly responded to the campaign, his camp is believed to be monitoring the situation closely, aware that the once-unquestioned grip on the senatorial district may be facing its most serious internal challenge.

For Ndokwa East and the wider Ndokwa/Ukwuani Federal Constituency, the unfolding drama may mark the beginning of a new political realignment. Whether the agitation matures into a structured movement capable of altering the traditional power equation remains to be seen. What is clear, however, is that the era of silent acceptance is giving way to open contestation, as forces within the constituency signal their readiness to “liberate” the political space and redefine representation ahead of the decisive 2027 elections.
