OKPUNO/Nigeria: A Catholic priest, Chimaobi Okoye, has urged Christians to celebrate Christmas with moderation and sober reflection, stressing that the season is centred on the birth of Jesus Christ and not on personal extravagance or social pressure.
Rev. Fr. Okoye made the call during his Christmas homily at the Good Shepherd Catholic Church, Okpuno, located within the Archbishop Obiefuna Retreat Centre, Okpuno, Anambra State.
He cautioned that Christmas celebrations should not compel individuals or families to live beyond their means, noting that the true essence of the season has often been overshadowed by excessive spending and the urge to impress others.
According to him, Christmas is not a platform for showcasing wealth or personal achievements, but a period for spiritual renewal and reflection on God’s gift to humanity through the birth of Christ.
“The essence of Christmas goes beyond wearing new clothes or organising lavish celebrations,” he said. “It calls for deep reflection on the significance of Christ’s birth and what it represents for mankind.”
The cleric encouraged Christians to emulate the life and teachings of Jesus Christ by showing love, making sacrifices and rendering selfless service to others, particularly the less privileged in society.
He added that celebrating Christmas in line with Christian values would strengthen communities and promote peace, compassion and genuine human connection beyond the festive season.
