Delta State NUJ Warns Against Falsehood, Sensational Reporting

media-orgAsaba: The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council, has admonished Journalists in the state to eschew falsehood and sensational reporting in the performance of their duties.

In a statement issued by the Chairman of the Council, Comrade Norbert Chiazor and Secretary, Comrade Churchill Oyowe, the union said jaundiced and biased reportage had no place in journalism.

The statement noted that the union had been inundated in recent times with complaints of false and mischievous reports by some Journalists, saying they were not only inimical to the growth and development of the state and the nation but also an embarrassment to the journalism profession.

The union particularly expressed displeasure at malicious and unsubstantiated stories against some top government functionaries and eminent personalities in the state, saying it showed brazen and uninformed display of irresponsible journalism.

It warned that the union would henceforth evoke the relevant provisions of the NUJ Constitution on erring Journalists who had the proclivity to bring the image of the profession to disrepute.

The NUJ however assured members of the public that practicing Journalists in the state would continue to abide by the best professional standards in the discharge of their duties, noting that those giving the union bad name were very few.

The Delta Council of the NUJ stated that as a way of discouraging mediocrity and quackery, it had instituted the verification of Journalists in the state and award of excellence, stressing they were all dedicated to promoting the dignity of journalism as a noble profession.
