ASABA/Nigeria: Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has stressed the critical need for strict compliance with town planning and urban development laws to create a safe, secure, and flood-free environment. This call for cooperation between regulatory officials and the public comes in the wake of the devastating effects of flooding in the country.
The governor made these remarks in a meeting with officials from the Town Planning Office and other regulatory authorities, during a visit by the National President and Executive members of the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners, led by Mr. Nathaniel Atebije, at Government House, Asaba.
The visit provided a platform to discuss the theme of the conference, “Planning Nigerian Settlements for Climate Change Adaptation and Flood Resilience,” which Governor Oborevwori noted was timely given the pressing concerns related to climate change and global warming.
Governor Oborevwori emphasized the crucial role of town planning in preventing flooding in urban centers and communities. He condemned the indiscriminate construction of buildings on waterways, stating that it was a problem that must be addressed urgently.
He provided updates on the progress of the Warri storm drainage project, indicating that about 70 percent of the project had been completed. However, he acknowledged that challenges arose due to structures being built on waterways, which disrupt the flow of water. The governor stressed that he had given orders for the demolition of such structures and urged town planners to be vigilant in preventing such approvals.
Governor Oborevwori urged the town planning body to ensure that members do not grant approvals without visiting project sites to verify the suitability of the environment for such buildings.
He commended the efforts of Delta State in addressing flooding issues and the successful reduction of flooding in Asaba, thanks to the storm drainage project. Still, he underscored the importance of continued vigilance and adherence to town planning laws.
Atebije, the National President of the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners, shared that they were in Asaba for the 54th Annual Conference and General Meeting of the institute, where discussions revolved around challenges related to climate change, flood resilience, and mitigation measures. He highlighted that Delta State, being a coastal state, would significantly benefit from these discussions.
Mr. Atebije also lauded Governor Oborevwori for his environment-friendly policies and encouraged him to engage certified town planners in the Ministry of Urban Renewal for the implementation of master plans in towns and cities across the state.
