ASABA/Nigeria: The reconstruction of the ECN/Otu-Jeremi/Udu Road has moved closer to commencement following the resolution of key pre-construction issues between the Delta State Government, the project contractor and representatives of host communities.
The breakthrough came at a stakeholders’ meeting in Asaba, where officials of the Ministry of Works, Niger Cat Construction Limited and community representatives agreed on measures aimed at ensuring a smooth execution of the long-awaited road project.
The rehabilitation of the road is expected to improve access to communities in Ughelli South and Udu Local Government Areas, reduce travel time and facilitate the movement of agricultural produce, goods and other commercial activities along the corridor.
Addressing stakeholders at the meeting, the Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Comrade Reuben Izeze, said the engagement was convened to resolve outstanding concerns before construction begins.
He said the government expects the contractor to deliver the project according to approved specifications and within the agreed completion period, stressing that uninterrupted collaboration among all stakeholders would be essential to achieving that objective.
Izeze announced the appointment of a Special Project Coordinator and the designation of community liaison representatives to strengthen communication between the government, the contractor and residents throughout the construction period.
According to him, the arrangement is intended to provide a platform for resolving issues promptly and preventing avoidable disputes that could slow the pace of work.
The commissioner also disclosed that officials of the state government and Niger Cat Construction Limited would visit traditional rulers in the affected communities next week as part of efforts to consolidate local support before mobilisation to site.
Project Manager of Niger Cat Construction Limited, Engineer George, described the meeting as productive, saying it enabled stakeholders to address critical issues ahead of the commencement of construction.
He expressed confidence that the understanding reached would allow the company to mobilise to site without unnecessary delays and execute the project in line with expectations.
Speaking on behalf of the host communities, Olorogun Godwin Sito welcomed the outcome of the meeting and assured the contractor of the cooperation of residents throughout the construction period.
He said sustained dialogue among the government, the contractor and community leaders would help create the peaceful environment required for the successful delivery of the project.
For years, the condition of the ECN/Otu-Jeremi/Udu Road has posed challenges for commuters, transport operators and businesses operating along the route. Residents expect the planned reconstruction to improve connectivity between communities, lower transportation costs and stimulate economic activities across the area.
