AWKA/Nigeria: Tragedy struck on Friday night as four women lost their lives in a fatal road traffic crash involving four vehicles at Agulu Lake along the Nanka-Agulu Road in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Anambra State, Mrs. Bridget Asekhauno, confirmed the incident to journalists on Saturday in Awka, attributing the crash to excessive speeding and loss of control.
According to her, the accident involved a Toyota Hiace bus with registration number HAL676YG, a trailer, a shuttle bus marked UKP274YA, and an unregistered Toyota Hilux.
She disclosed that there were no eyewitness accounts as all the drivers involved fled the scene. However, preliminary investigations by FRSC rescue operatives from the Nanka outpost indicated that a vehicle descending the hill at high speed lost control and rammed into three other vehicles.
Asekhauno revealed that a total of 19 persons were involved in the crash, comprising six adult males, 10 adult females, and three male children.
She confirmed that four women died in the incident, while five others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
The injured victims were evacuated to St. Joseph Hospital, Adazi, for medical attention, while the remains of the deceased were deposited in the hospital morgue.
The FRSC boss further noted that officials created an alternative route to ease traffic congestion caused by the crash.
She commiserated with the families of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery, while urging motorists to adhere strictly to traffic regulations.
“Drive safely to stay alive; safety is everyone’s responsibility,” Asekhauno advised.
