ABUJA/Nigeria: A political support group, the Hilary Support Group, has intensified calls for former Delta State Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, to contest for the Senate in the 2027 general elections, citing his wealth of experience and proven leadership record.
The appeal was made in Abuja during a dinner hosted for members of the Lion’s Family, where the group’s convener and former Principal Secretary to Okowa, Dr. Hilary Ibegbulem, said the push reflects a growing desire to return seasoned leadership to the National Assembly.
Ibegbulem described Okowa as a highly experienced administrator whose career spans multiple tiers of governance, stressing that his track record makes him well-suited for a return to the Senate.
“He was governor for eight years in Delta State, and before that, he served in several critical capacities, including Secretary to a Local Government Council, Council Chairman, Commissioner, and Secretary to the State Government,” he said.
He noted that Okowa’s earlier stint in the Senate showcased his legislative competence and dedication to development, adding that his re-entry into the upper chamber would enhance stability and quality representation.
According to Ibegbulem, members of the group are already mobilising support at the grassroots level and are prepared to deploy resources to ensure the former governor’s successful return to the National Assembly.
“We are calling on our leader and mentor to heed this appeal and return as a high-ranking senator. All of us are ready to commit our energy and resources to make this a reality,” he stated.
He made a direct appeal to Okowa to accept the call to national service once again, expressing optimism that the former governor would heed the growing demand.
“Our leader must return to the Senate by the special grace of God,” he added.
Okowa, who represented Delta North Senatorial District between 2011 and 2015 before his election as governor in 2015, has yet to publicly respond to the call.
