LAGOS/Nigeria: The Lagos State Government has commenced the installation of new pumping equipment at the Iju Headworks and Akute Water Intake Stations as part of a broader effort to rehabilitate ageing water infrastructure and improve the delivery of potable water to residents across the state.
Managing Director of the Lagos Water Corporation (LWC), Engr. Mukhtaar Tijani, disclosed that the project forms part of an ongoing rehabilitation programme targeting key water production facilities, with the objective of increasing operational efficiency, boosting water output and strengthening the reliability of public water supply.
According to Tijani, the installation of the new pumps is being carried out under the Rehabilitation of Iju Headworks and Akute Intake Station – Lots 1, 2 and 3, a project designed to modernise critical infrastructure that supports water production and distribution in Lagos.
He explained that the intervention is one of the major components of the corporation’s eight-month rehabilitation programme covering the Iju and Adiyan Water Treatment Plants. The exercise, funded by the Lagos State Government, commenced in February this year and is expected to be completed in October.
The LWC managing director said the rehabilitation would involve the replacement of obsolete pumping systems and the upgrade of associated facilities to restore operational efficiency and improve the corporation’s capacity to meet the growing water needs of the state’s expanding population.
Speaking during the project’s kick-off meeting at the corporation’s headquarters in Ijora, Tijani described the initiative as a key aspect of the corporation’s Strategic Business Plan and an important step towards improving public water services in Lagos.
He said the project reflects the state government’s continued investment in essential infrastructure aimed at providing residents with a more dependable and sustainable public water supply.
Tijani urged contractors handling various aspects of the rehabilitation to adhere strictly to approved engineering standards and project timelines to ensure the successful delivery of the programme.
“This project must not be business as usual. We want all hands on deck to ensure timely and successful delivery. Let this dream become a reality,” he said.
The Lagos Water Corporation said the rehabilitation is expected to improve the operational performance of the Iju Headworks and Akute Water Intake Stations, increase water production capacity, reduce equipment downtime and enhance the efficiency of water distribution across the state.
It added that the project forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen public water infrastructure and improve access to safe and potable water for residents while supporting the Lagos State Government’s long-term development objectives.
