Nationwide Dignitaries Storm Uburu as Tributes Flow for Late Mrs. Ozioma Dora Umahi Nwaeze

Dignitaries, family members and mourners gather in Uburu, Ohaozara LGA, Ebonyi State, to pay their last respects to the late Mrs. Ozioma Dora Umahi Nwaeze, as governors, ministers, top government officials, clergy, traditional rulers and the Nigerian Bar Association joined the Umahi family in a solemn and high-profile funeral ceremony.

UBURU/NigeriaThe quiet town of Uburu in Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State transformed into a convergence point for Nigeria’s political, religious, judicial, industrial and traditional elite as they gathered to honour the life and legacy of the late Mrs. Ozioma Dora Umahi Nwaeze, beloved wife of Chief Roy Nwaeze Umahi, SAN.

Governors, senators, ministers, captains of industry, senior lawyers, federal and state officials, religious leaders, traditional rulers and professionals from across the country poured into Uburu — the hometown of prominent Nigerians including the late Engr. Ajah Eze, late Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, Minister of Works Senator Dave N. Umahi, and Major-General Abel Umahi (rtd.). The community, which hosts the David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences and King David University Hospital, witnessed one of its most high-profile gatherings in recent history.

The late Mrs. Ozioma’s passing drew an extraordinary show of solidarity. Governor Francis Nwifuru led the Ebonyi State Government delegation; Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti attended in person; and Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, was represented by his deputy. Senator Dave Umahi, visibly grieving yet composed, welcomed guests alongside his elder brother, Major General Abel Umahi, and younger brother, Deacon Austin Umahi, who mobilised dignitaries from the North.

Chief Roy Umahi, her widower and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, was supported by the leadership of the Nigerian Bar Association, RCCG clerics and numerous professional bodies as the community bid farewell to a woman described variously as a virtuous wife, devoted mother, community pillar and servant of God.

A Sermon of Hope

In a moving sermon titled “The Benefits of Death,” Pastor Dennis Okezie of RCCG Ebonyi Province 3 drew from 1 Corinthians 15:55–57 and Ecclesiastes 7:1, explaining that the death of a saint ushers them into glory. Through scripture, he reminded the congregation that “death is not an end but a transition,” prompting several attendees to recommit their lives to Christ. Pastor Adegbite James Adeola later led prayers for the family.

A Life of Devotion, Strength and Service

Born on December 16, 1972, to respected educators Mr. and Mrs. Ayozie of Imo State, Ozioma’s life was shaped by discipline, faith and compassion. Educated in Imo, Anambra, Plateau and Rivers States, she distinguished herself as an excellent student, wife, mother, entrepreneur and devout Christian.

She married Chief Roy Umahi in 1997, a union blessed with four children. Her grace, kindness and industriousness earned her admiration within Uburu, Port Harcourt and beyond. Until illness struck, she served diligently in RCCG’s evangelism department, ran successful businesses and championed community development, particularly for women.

Tributes Flow from Family, Leaders and Institutions

Her husband, Chief Roy Umahi (SAN), described her as “the heartbeat of my soul… a gift from God whose strength, faith and love held our family together.” He recounted her courage through illness, her devotion to family and her unwavering faith until her final moments.

Her children remembered her as a wise counsellor, comforter and loving mother whose sacrifices shaped their lives.
“Life will never be the same without her,” one wrote.
Another added: “She was my gist mate, my inspiration and my calm in every storm.”

High Chief Nwaze Umahi and his wife hailed her as a rare gem whose generosity and spirit touched everyone she encountered.

General Abel Umahi (rtd.) recounted the family’s final moments with her, noting that although she fought courageously, “her home call brought tears and pain, but she now rests where suffering ends.”

Senator David Umahi, Minister of Works, said her death left him “shocked and devastated,” describing her as a woman of “light, grace and quiet strength” who enriched the Umahi family with her kindness.

Deacon Austin Umahi mourned a sister whose humility and compassion were “immeasurable,” while Catherine & Stanley Umahi described her passing as “a wound words cannot heal.”

Governor Francis Nwifuru praised her as “an epitome of womanhood whose life touched many,” urging her husband to take solace in her legacy.

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, condoled with the family, calling her “a virtuous woman whose grace, humility and faith inspired countless lives.”

Ebonyi Deputy Governor, Princess Patricia Obila, remembered her devotion to faith, family and community.
The Speaker of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly called her “a rare personality whose kindness will not be forgotten.”
The Chief Judge of Ebonyi State described her as “a pillar of strength, mother of virtue and servant of God.”
The Secretary to the State Government, Professor Grace Umezurike, said her life was marked by “faith, service and love.”

The General Overseer of OPM, Apostle Chibuzor Chinyere, described her as a “faithful servant, intercessor and pillar of charity,” urging the family not to mourn like those without hope.

Chief Eze’s Tribute: “One of the Hardest Pieces I Have Ever Written”

APC chieftain and former nPDP spokesman, Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, who chronicled the ceremony, said writing the tribute was emotionally draining because of his close relationship with the Umahi family.
He prayed: “May God grant our sister eternal rest, and grant us all the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss. Adieu, great Ozioma — you fought a good fight.”

Final Rest

The remains of Mrs. Ozioma Dora Umahi Nwaeze were laid to rest at her husband’s compound after a solemn church service at the Umahi family pavilion in Uburu. Her burial drew one of the most significant gatherings in the history of the community — a fitting honour for a woman whose life illuminated many others.

She is survived by her husband, four children, siblings, and the entire Umahi and Ayozie families.
