WARRI/Nigeria: In commemorating the International Anti-Corruption Day 2023, the Community Empowerment and Development Initiative (CEDI) has advocated for a robust Anti-Corruption law and heightened transparency in the allocation of contracts within Delta State, particularly targeting the State’s Oil Producing Area Development Commission (DESOPADEC).

During a press conference held in Warri, CEDI articulated the urgent need for stringent measures, emphasizing the pervasive impact of corruption on local and global development. Onose Martha, the Executive Director of CEDI, underscored the criticality of collective action, stating, “Corruption remains the bane of development at the local and global levels. Significant progress in humanity requires a concerted effort to combat it.”

Aligning with the Anti-Corruption Cluster of ANEEJ and receiving support from Palladium USAID SCALE PROJECT, CEDI strategically utilized the International Anti-Corruption Day as a platform to rally Delta State residents and the global community towards introspection and a unified commitment to eradicating corruption across all tiers.

Martha stressed, “This year’s IACD coincides with the 20th Anniversary of the United Nations Convention against Corruption, highlighting the pressing need for resolute action.”

The organization’s focal point revolves around urging the government to implement state-specific Anti-Corruption strategies, particularly in the allocation of DESOPADEC contracts. Martha firmly articulated, “We implore the state government to fortify its Anti-Corruption Law and enforce transparency in DESOPADEC’s contract awards.”

Pointing to recent events in the state as catalysts for concern, she emphasized, “Government action is imperative to address these issues and demonstrate a genuine commitment to combating corruption.”

CEDI’s recommendations encompass the establishment of an autonomous monitoring body comprising individuals known for their integrity, instituting a transparent public notice system for contract details, implementing automated tracking systems to ensure budget compliance, and introducing whistleblower protection policies to encourage reporting of malpractice.

The organization earnestly appealed to Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori to swiftly enact these measures, emphasizing the imperative of restoring public trust in the state’s institutions.
