Nigerians in Diaspora Demand Resignation of INEC Chairman and Senate President Amid Allegations of Election Fraud and Budget Padding

ABUJA/Nigeria: In a resolute stance against what they termed as a “shambolic 2023 general elections,” the United Nigerians in the Diaspora (UND) has declared their intention to stage massive street protests. These protests are aimed at Nigerian embassies in Washington DC, several other US cities, London, and major cities across Europe and Asia, demanding the immediate resignation of Professor Mahmoud Yakubu, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

The UND, represented by its president worldwide, Ambassador Yusuf Adeyinka, and general secretary worldwide, Comrade Johnson Acheme, issued a statement in Abuja on Monday outlining their grievances and proposed actions. They accused Yakubu of presiding over an election characterized by irregularities and inefficiencies, citing the squandering of a staggering N300 billion and the failure to deliver on promised electoral reforms.

The group’s statement highlighted their disappointment with the INEC chairman’s failure to uphold transparency and implement technological innovations promised during the electoral process. They expressed particular concern over what they perceive as Yakubu’s alignment with political interests, insinuating his potential involvement in future fraudulent electoral activities.

Furthermore, the UND applauded Senator Ningi’s bravery in exposing alleged budget padding within the National Assembly. They gave Senate President Akpabio a 48-hour ultimatum to resign, citing accusations of collusion with the executive branch and incapacity to fulfill his duties.

The UND pledged to initiate peaceful protests in key cities worldwide, including Washington DC, New York, London, and Paris, until their demands for Yakubu and Akpabio’s resignation are met. They called upon the international community, particularly democratic nations, to support their cause by denying entry to individuals implicated in electoral malpractice and corruption.

In closing, the UND urged global organizations such as the United Nations and the European Union to take decisive action against those involved in undermining democratic processes in Nigeria. They vowed to continue their protests until accountability is achieved and those responsible for electoral fraud and budget padding are held to account.
