ASABA/Nigeria: The Delta State Chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) has urged Nigerians to make integrity, accountability and responsible conduct central to efforts to improve the country’s reputation at home and abroad.
In a statement signed by its Chairman, Godfrey C. Osakwe, fnipr, to mark Nigeria Reputation Day on Thursday, October 15, 2026, the chapter said the country’s image depended not only on how it was portrayed internationally but also on the everyday actions of its citizens, institutions and leaders.
Commemorated under the theme, “Own the Narrative: Shaping Nigeria’s Reputation Together,” this year’s event highlights the shared responsibility of citizens and institutions in shaping perceptions of Nigeria.
The Delta NIPR chapter said the country’s reputation could not be strengthened through publicity campaigns alone, arguing that public confidence must be earned through credible leadership, ethical practices, effective institutions and consistent conduct.
It noted that Nigeria had considerable strengths in creativity, entrepreneurship, cultural influence and the resilience of its people, but stressed that these qualities must be matched by responsible governance and a commitment to doing what is right.
The chapter called on Nigerians to demonstrate discipline, patriotism, professionalism and accountability in their homes, workplaces, businesses, public institutions and communities.
It maintained that national reputation was built through actions that inspire confidence, rather than claims that are not supported by people’s everyday experiences.
With the 2027 general elections approaching, the NIPR chapter also urged political leaders, parties and citizens to respect the rule of law, reject violence and hate speech, and place the national interest above personal and partisan ambitions.
It said peaceful, credible and orderly elections would be important in strengthening Nigeria’s democratic standing and reinforcing confidence in the country.
The chapter further called on governments, the private sector, the media, civil society organisations and other institutions to take an active role in promoting integrity, excellence and responsible citizenship.
It emphasised that every Nigerian had a part to play in shaping the country’s narrative, adding that words and actions should reflect the standards of a nation seeking greater respect and trust from the international community.
The Delta NIPR chapter urged citizens to work collectively towards building a country that inspires confidence and offers hope to present and future generations.
It concluded with a call for Nigerians to take ownership of the country’s future through shared responsibility and a sustained commitment to national development.
