Comrade Churchill Oyowe, re-elected Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council

ASABA/Nigeria: Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has called on the re-elected Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council, Comrade Churchill Oyowe, to unite members across opposing camps and extend a hand of fellowship to his challenger following a closely contested election.

Oyowe won the chairmanship poll with 235 votes, defeating Comrade Kenneth Obieh, who secured 218 votes, in a contest that left a narrow margin between the two candidates.

In a congratulatory statement issued in Asaba on Friday by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, Oborevwori described the election as free, fair and credible, expressing confidence in Oyowe’s ability to lead the union and promote professionalism among journalists in the state.

The Governor said the chairman’s responsibility after the election was to represent the entire union, including members who supported other candidates, stressing that reconciliation and inclusiveness would be essential to sustaining unity within the council.

“Lead everybody, not just those who voted for you. The election is over. Now is time for unity. Bring everybody together. I urge you to extend a hand of fellowship to your opponent. Delta NUJ must remain united under your leadership,” the Governor said.

Oborevwori congratulated Oyowe and other members of the newly elected State Working Committee on behalf of his family, the Delta State Government and the people of the state.

He described Oyowe’s return to office as a vote of confidence from his colleagues, reflecting their trust in his leadership, integrity and capacity to continue directing the affairs of the union.

Other winners in the election included Comrade Patrick Ochei, who emerged Vice Chairman with 241 votes against Comrade Monday Osayande’s 173 votes.

Comrade Felix Ekwu was elected State Secretary, defeating Comrade Pere Botu, while Comrade Josephine Omodior emerged Assistant State Secretary ahead of Comrade Andy Emephia.

Caroline Ubini, Comrade Toju Oteri and Comrade Michael Ilaya were returned unopposed as Treasurer, Financial Secretary and Auditor, respectively.

The Governor’s appeal for unity comes as the new leadership begins its tenure, with expectations that the State Working Committee will work with members across the council to strengthen the union and advance the professional interests of journalists in Delta State.
