ASABA/Nigeria: Former Minister of Information and distinguished political scientist, Professor Sam Oyovbaire, on Tuesday marked his 85th birthday, drawing tributes for a career that has spanned academia, public service and governance, and earned him recognition as one of Delta State’s most accomplished elder statesmen.

Widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s leading scholars in political science, Oyovbaire has served in several national and state leadership roles, including as Minister of Information and Chairman of the Delta State Advisory and Peace Building Council, where he continues to contribute to peacebuilding and policy advisory initiatives.

Joining other well-wishers to celebrate the milestone, Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, described the octogenarian as a respected scholar, administrator and patriot whose contributions to nation-building have remained significant over the decades.

In a goodwill message issued on Tuesday in Asaba by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, the governor said Oyovbaire’s achievements in academia, governance and public administration have earned him national recognition and made him one of Delta State’s most distinguished sons.

Oborevwori noted that Oyovbaire’s leadership of the Delta State Advisory and Peace Building Council has continued to support dialogue, peaceful coexistence and stability across the state.

He also recalled the professor’s tenure as Nigeria’s Minister of Information during the administration of former military President General Ibrahim Babangida, saying his experience in public administration and policy formulation has remained valuable to successive governments.

According to the governor, Oyovbaire’s intellectual contributions to political science, governance and public administration continue to influence scholarship and public policy while inspiring younger generations of academics, public servants and political leaders.

“Professor Sam Oyovbaire is an exceptional scholar, accomplished administrator, respected statesman and leader whose life has been dedicated to the service of humanity,” Oborevwori said.

The governor congratulated the elder statesman on behalf of the government and people of Delta State, praying for continued good health, strength and fulfilment in the years ahead.

Over a career spanning several decades, Professor Oyovbaire has combined scholarship with public service, establishing himself as a respected voice in governance, democratic development and conflict resolution. His contributions to public policy and peacebuilding continue to shape conversations on leadership and development within Delta State and across Nigeria.
