OZORO/Nigeria: Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has said Nigeria’s democratic institutions can only deliver meaningful development when they are led by people of integrity, competence and a commitment to public service.
The governor made the assertion on Thursday at the inaugural Professor Sam Oyovbaire Public Service Lecture held at Southern Delta University, Orerokpe, where participants examined the role of leadership in strengthening democratic governance and nation-building.
Represented by the Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof. Nyerhovwo Tonukari, Oborevwori said while strong institutions remain essential to democracy, their success ultimately depends on the quality of leadership guiding them.
Speaking on the theme, “Federal Statecraft without Crafters: The Nigerian Predicament,” the governor described the lecture as a timely reflection on the leadership deficit confronting Nigeria and its implications for governance and national development.
According to him, sustainable democratic progress requires leaders who demonstrate accountability, patriotism, competence and a commitment to serving the public interest.
“Strong institutions are important, but they can only flourish when guided by men and women of character, competence and patriotism,” he said.
Oborevwori described the establishment of the annual Professor Sam Oyovbaire Public Service Lecture as a deserving recognition of the former Minister of Information and renowned political scientist, whose contributions to democracy, governance and federalism have shaped public policy debates and academic scholarship over the years.
He noted that Oyovbaire’s career in academia and public service continues to inspire younger generations of scholars, administrators and public officials.
The governor also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to inclusive governance, prudent resource management and sustainable development through the implementation of the M.O.R.E. Agenda.
He urged participants to ensure that ideas generated during the lecture translate into practical policy initiatives capable of strengthening democratic institutions and improving governance across the country.
Oborevwori further commended Southern Delta University for institutionalising the annual lecture series, describing it as a platform that would encourage constructive dialogue on leadership, governance and national development.
The inaugural lecture attracted members of the Delta State House of Assembly, members of the State Executive Council, the Vice-Chancellor of Southern Delta University, Prof. Sunny Awhefeada, academics, traditional rulers, religious leaders and other stakeholders.
