Some years ago, the Kwale/Ozoro expressway was dualised in what was seen as a welcome development by all and sundry in Kwale.
Road users are expected to stay on their lane to avoid head-on collision and this helps in no small way in reducing accident cases.
Years after the dualisation, automobile users have bluntly refused to obey simple traffic laws in Kwale. The Federal Road Safety Commission in Kwale and the Nigeria Police have been doing their best to stop the wrong use of lanes but there has been strong resistance from motorbike and car users.
Even when fatal accidents resulting from wrong use of lanes have claimed many lives, it has not served as a deterrent to those involved in the act. We spoke to some bike men on this issue and their response was that the points where they were expected to turn were too far, so they choose the easy way out.
We use this medium to draw the attention of higher authorities to intervene in this matter so as to enforce compliance of the traffic laws in Kwale. If it means imposing very stringent penalties on defaulters, let it be done so that our roads can remain safe for users.
