ASABA/Nigeria: The Delta State Police Command has stepped up security preparations for the 2026 New Yam Festival in Onicha-Olona, Aniocha North Local Government Area, with personnel to be deployed to strategic locations throughout the celebration.
The command said the festival, scheduled to run from September 13 to 26, 2026, would be covered by personnel deployed to the festival grounds, major entry and exit routes, identified flashpoints and other sensitive locations within the community.
The disclosure was contained in a statement signed by the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, on behalf of the command.
According to the statement, Commissioner of Police, CP Samuel Etaifo Erale, has directed the deployment as part of measures to prevent security breaches and ensure the festival is conducted peacefully.
The command said patrol and traffic teams had also been assigned to adjoining routes to regulate vehicular movement and respond promptly to emergencies and other incidents during the festival period.
Erale warned that the police would not tolerate violence, cult-related activities, fighting, possession or use of firearms and other dangerous weapons during the celebration.
He also cautioned individuals and groups against using the festival as an opportunity to settle personal disputes, carry out reprisals, harass or intimidate others, or engage in any activity capable of disrupting public peace.
The Commissioner warned that persons found violating the law would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The police urged residents and visitors attending the festival to cooperate with personnel deployed to the community and avoid actions capable of triggering conflict.
Parents and guardians were also advised to maintain proper supervision of their children and wards throughout the festivities, while motorists were urged to drive responsibly and comply with traffic directives from security personnel.
The command further appealed to members of the public to avoid confrontations and refrain from taking the law into their own hands, urging them instead to report suspicious persons, threats or disturbances promptly to the police.
Erale assured residents of Onicha-Olona and visitors that officers deployed for the festival had been instructed to remain vigilant, professional and responsive throughout the celebration.
He also called on traditional rulers, community leaders, youths and other stakeholders to support the police in maintaining the peace and ensuring that the festival achieves its cultural and communal objectives without security disruptions.
