ASABA/Nigeria: The Southern Nigerian Youth Congress (SNYC) has thrown its weight behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori ahead of the 2027 general elections, urging continued support for both leaders.
The youth organisation announced its position in Asaba on Tuesday after members marched through parts of the city and later converged at the Delta State Government House, where they presented their resolution to the state government.
Speaking for the group, its President-General, Wiska Monday, said the endorsement followed an assessment of political developments and what the organisation described as the performance of the Tinubu administration at the federal level and Oborevwori’s government in Delta.
Monday said the group was particularly concerned about the continuation of what it described as the existing practice of rotational presidency, arguing that the South should retain the presidency through 2031.
He said the endorsement of Tinubu was not based exclusively on his being a southerner, but also on policies and reforms which the group considered significant.
Among the measures cited were the removal of fuel subsidy, efforts towards greater financial autonomy for local governments, the student loan initiative and infrastructure development.
The SNYC leader acknowledged that some of the Federal Government’s economic measures had created hardship for Nigerians in the short term, but argued that their longer-term effects should also be considered.
On security, Monday said the country’s insecurity challenges predated the present administration. He commended recent efforts to strengthen the security architecture and expressed support for moves towards greater sub-national participation in policing.
He said the congress believed that retaining the presidency in the South until 2031 would promote what it described as political balance and continuity.
The organisation also declared support for Oborevwori’s re-election bid, citing what it described as development projects and other achievements of his administration across Delta State.
Monday said the group would mobilise its members in support of both candidates as political activities ahead of the 2027 elections intensify.
Responding on behalf of the state government, the Director of Protocol, Chief Sunday Onoriode, commended the youth delegates for their political position and described the endorsement as an expression of confidence in the leadership of Tinubu and Oborevwori.
Onoriode acknowledged the economic difficulties facing Nigerians but said the country was gradually making progress and appealed for patience and collective support.
He said the message from the youth group would be conveyed to Governor Oborevwori, who would, in turn, communicate the position to the President.
The Director of Protocol also urged young Nigerians to participate responsibly in politics, saying they should not allow themselves to be used to manipulate or coerce others.
He said the group’s call for the South to retain the presidency reflected its argument that the region had previously supported leaders from other parts of the country and should now have the opportunity to continue in power.
Also speaking with journalists, the Grand Patron of the SNYC and Chairman of Warri South Local Government Council, Hon. Weyinmi Isaac Agbateyiniro, expressed solidarity with the endorsement.
Agbateyiniro further claimed that the Delta State chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) had also endorsed the re-election bids of Tinubu and Oborevwori.
That claim could not be independently established from the material available for this report and is therefore attributed to Agbateyiniro.
The endorsement adds to a growing number of political groups and organisations in Delta State declaring support for Tinubu and Oborevwori ahead of the 2027 elections. Similar endorsements have previously come from APC support groups, workers’ organisations and serving and former Delta lawmakers.
