LAGOS/Nigeria: Trinity University, Yaba, Lagos, has expanded its academic and residential capacity with the acquisition of an 850-bed student facility and approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC) to introduce three additional programmes.
The development was disclosed by the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Clement Kolawole, during the dedication of the newly acquired six-storey annex on Commercial Avenue, Yaba, on Thursday.
Kolawole said the new programmes — Community Health, Public Health and Environmental Health — had raised the number of the university’s fully accredited programmes to 22. The expansion comes as the institution continues to broaden its academic offerings and respond to demand for student accommodation.
According to the Vice-Chancellor, accommodation had previously posed a challenge to the university’s capacity, particularly for prospective students seeking residential facilities.
He said the newly acquired building would help address the gap, with the six-storey facility providing student accommodation alongside laboratories, classrooms, a cafeteria and library facilities.
Kolawole said the university would continue to focus on student and staff welfare while ensuring that academic activities commence on schedule and that students have an environment conducive to learning.
He urged students to take their academic responsibilities seriously by attending lectures, making effective use of the library, completing assignments and preparing adequately for examinations.
The Vice-Chancellor also disclosed that the university’s fee payment arrangement allows parents to pay tuition in four instalments of 40 per cent, 20 per cent, 20 per cent and 20 per cent.
He said the arrangement was introduced to help families spread their financial obligations while enabling students to continue their education without unnecessary disruption.
Kolawole, however, stressed that parents were expected to honour the agreed payment schedule as the institution continued to provide academic and welfare support to students.
At the dedication ceremony, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Pastor Samuel Olatunji, attributed the institution’s expansion to what he described as a long journey of faith, perseverance and commitment.
Olatunji said the development represented another stage in the evolution of the Trinity Education Foundation, which began more than three decades ago with a school before expanding into higher education.
He said the university had continued to develop through successive stages while maintaining its founding mission, adding that the institution would continue to build on its achievements and look to future generations to sustain its vision.
Delivering the dedication sermon, the General Overseer of Foursquare Gospel Church, Nigeria, Rev. Sam Aboyeji, said dedicating the facility to God was an expression of gratitude and a commitment to placing its use under God’s care.
Aboyeji emphasised the importance of God’s presence in human endeavours and referred to the biblical account of Moses’ insistence that he would not proceed without God’s presence.
He also shared a testimony of a man who, after spending time in prayer and worship before attending a job interview, was selected ahead of other candidates.
The cleric said the account illustrated his message on the significance of faith and spiritual preparation.
The new facility and additional academic programmes mark a further expansion of Trinity University’s operations in Yaba, with the institution now combining increased residential capacity with a broader range of accredited courses.
