Troops Arrest Suspected Gunrunner, Recover Machine Guns in Intelligence-Led Operation

ASABA/Nigeria: Troops of the Nigerian Army attached to 6 Brigade / Sector 3 of Operation Whirl Stroke have arrested a suspected arms trafficker during a swift intelligence-driven operation in Ibi Local Government Area, in what authorities described as a major breakthrough against illegal weapons proliferation.

The suspect, identified as Abubakar Ibrahim, a 48-year-old native of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, was apprehended on February 12, 2026, following actionable intelligence that prompted troops stationed at the Forward Operating Base in Wukari to launch a targeted operation.

Military authorities said a detailed search conducted after the arrest led to the recovery of six PKT machine guns, two rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, a Peugeot 504 vehicle, a mobile phone, ₦170,000 in cash and assorted personal items. The suspect is currently in custody and undergoing further investigation as security agencies intensify efforts to dismantle arms supply networks in the region.

The Commander of 6 Brigade/Sector 3 OPWS, Chukwuemeka Micheal Akaliro, commended the troops for what he described as exceptional vigilance, professionalism and rapid response, noting that the interception has denied criminal elements access to weapons capable of fueling violence and instability.

He also praised residents for providing credible intelligence that aided the operation’s success and urged members of the public to remain security-conscious and continue supporting security agencies with useful information. According to him, the Brigade remains committed to its mandate of protecting lives and property while restoring lasting peace across Taraba State.
