LAGOS/Nigeria: Nigeria’s aviation sector came alive in a dazzling display of professionalism and innovation as industry stakeholders gathered in Lagos for the 15th Nigeria Aviation Awards and Ministerial Dinner, where excellence took centre stage and outstanding performers were honoured.

The event, themed “Industry Rebirth,” featured the crowning of Blossom Ubani of Ibom Air and Adebote James of Arik Air as the new Queen and King of Air, following a keenly contested live competition involving 12 finalists drawn from leading domestic carriers.

The competition, which attracted participants from airlines including ValueJet, XEJet, Air Peace, Rano Air, Arik Air and Aero Contractors, tested contestants on a broad range of competencies beyond appearance, with emphasis on aviation knowledge, safety awareness, customer service delivery and crisis management under pressure.

Industry observers noted that the initiative has continued to elevate standards among cabin crew and frontline personnel, while reinforcing a culture of service excellence across Nigeria’s aviation landscape.

The emergence of Ubani and James was widely celebrated, with stakeholders describing their victories as reflective of the high standards within their respective airlines. While Ubani’s triumph underscores Ibom Air’s growing reputation for consistency in service delivery, James’ win highlights the depth of professionalism within Arik Air.

Beyond the pageantry, the awards ceremony recognised several organisations and individuals for outstanding contributions to the sector. Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal Two (MMA2), operated by Bi-Courtney Aviation Services Limited, secured multiple honours, including Best Nigeria Domestic Terminal of the Year and Best Airport Accessibility and Inclusivity Award.

In addition, the Chairman of BASL, Dr. Wale Babalakin, was named Outstanding Aviation Entrepreneur, while Mr. Remi Jibodu, Acting Chief Operating Officer and Head of Aeronautics and Cargo Services, emerged Passenger Terminal Manager of the Year.

MMA2’s recognition was attributed to its nearly two decades of consistent operational excellence, efficient passenger handling, and commitment to maintaining high standards in safety, orderliness and customer satisfaction. The terminal has also distinguished itself through continuous improvements aimed at enhancing accessibility and inclusivity for all categories of travellers.

Reacting to the honours, the terminal’s management expressed appreciation to industry stakeholders, reaffirming its commitment to sustained investment in technology, infrastructure and human capital to retain its position as a leading airport facility in Nigeria.

Air Peace also delivered a standout performance at the ceremony, clinching an unprecedented seven awards in one night, a feat widely described as historic within the industry.

The airline’s accolades spanned key categories, including Airline Executive Chief of the Year awarded to its Chairman and CEO, Dr. Allen Onyema, Nigerian Commercial Airline of the Year, Nigeria’s Best West Africa Sub-Regional Airline of the Year, Best Air Travel Mobile App, Best In-flight Magazine, Best Airport Lounge, and Pilot of the Year (Male Category).
