KWALE/Nigeria: Grief has enveloped the Umuseti community in Utagba-Uno, Delta State, following the death of elder statesman, educationist and respected community leader, Okwa Sir Mathias Onah, who passed on April 20 at the age of 93, bringing to a close a life widely regarded as a benchmark of service, discipline and enduring community impact.

The late patriarch’s passing has drawn tributes from across Ndokwa West and beyond, with many describing his death as the end of a defining era marked by quiet leadership, moral strength and unwavering dedication to the advancement of his people.

A devout Christian and Knight of St Michael Catholic Church, Okwa Sir Mathias Onah was known for a life deeply rooted in faith, expressed not only in worship but through consistent acts of service, mentorship and compassion within his community.

In the field of education, he carved a legacy that spanned decades, teaching in several primary and secondary schools across Ndokwa West, where he influenced generations of students who have since gone on to make meaningful contributions to society.

As an Agric Science teacher with a strong grounding in soil science, he earned the nickname “Topography” among his students—an affectionate tribute to both his mastery of the subject and his distinctive teaching style.

Colleagues and former students recall that his classrooms went beyond academic instruction, serving as spaces where discipline, character formation and life values were deliberately nurtured.

Beyond the classroom, Okwa Sir Mathias Onah played a central role in shaping the social and developmental trajectory of the Umuseti community. He was among the founding figures of the Umuseti Central Committee in the 1980s and contributed significantly to organising the maiden Ezeti Day celebration.

He was also instrumental in establishing the quarterly stakeholders’ meeting, a forum that has remained a critical platform for dialogue, unity and coordinated development within the community.

As a member of the revered Okwa-in-Council, he brought a calm, thoughtful and principled approach to leadership, earning respect across age groups for his ability to guide decisions through wisdom and consensus rather than confrontation.

Family members and community leaders describe his life as a testament to the transformative power of education and responsible parenting. Despite the challenges of his time, he ensured that all his children attained university education, setting a standard that influenced many families within the community.

In a condolence message, Ambassador Chuks Ododo, Coordinator of the Umu Ezeti Global Connect Initiative, described the late Onah as a man whose humility and commitment to communal progress left a lasting imprint on the people.

He extended sympathies to Dr. Heelas Onah and the entire Onah family, urging them to uphold the values of integrity, transparency and faith that defined their father’s life.

According to him, the late nonagenarian lived a fulfilled life dedicated to service, remaining steadfast in his beliefs and commitment to community until his final days.

As tributes continue to pour in, residents of Umuseti and neighbouring communities reflect on a legacy that transcends titles—a life devoted to building minds, strengthening institutions and fostering unity.

For many, Okwa Sir Mathias Onah was more than a teacher or community leader; he was a moral compass whose influence will endure through the generations he mentored and the structures he helped establish.

He is survived by children, grandchildren and a community that now bears the responsibility of sustaining the values he lived for.
