AWKA/Nigeria: As Nigeria joins the global community to mark World Malaria Day, the wife of the Anambra State Governor, Nonye Soludo, has called for intensified efforts to eliminate malaria, describing the disease as preventable yet persistently deadly, especially among vulnerable groups.
In her message to commemorate the April 25 observance, Mrs. Soludo urged individuals, families and institutions to embrace collective responsibility in combating malaria, aligning with this year’s theme, “Driven to End Malaria: Now We Can. Now We Must.”
She noted that despite being preventable, malaria continues to pose a serious public health threat, particularly to children and pregnant women, stressing that increased awareness and consistent action remain critical to reversing the trend.
According to her, practical preventive measures such as the use of insecticide-treated mosquito nets, maintaining hygienic environments and seeking prompt medical care are essential in reducing infection rates and preventing avoidable deaths.
Mrs. Soludo further assured that the Anambra State Government remains committed to policies and programmes that promote healthier living, adding that ongoing interventions are aimed at reducing the disease burden across communities.
She emphasised that government efforts alone would not suffice without active public participation, urging residents to adopt responsible health practices and support ongoing initiatives.
“A malaria-free society is possible. Now we can. Now we must,” she said, expressing optimism that sustained collaboration would significantly curb the spread of the disease in the state and beyond.
