LAGOS/Nigeria: Relief efforts have commenced for victims of the devastating fire that razed the Great Nigeria Insurance (GNI) building at Balogun Market, Lagos Island, with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Lagos State Government rolling out support materials to affected traders and families.
The intervention was confirmed in a statement issued by Mohammed Olatunde, who disclosed that the distribution exercise was formally flagged off at the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems, Oko-Oba, Agege, as part of a coordinated response to the December 24, 2025 incident.
Representing the Director-General of National Emergency Management Agency, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, the South-West Zonal Director, Mr. Akiode Saheed, conveyed condolences to victims on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, acknowledging the scale of losses suffered by businesses and households.
Umar noted that the Federal Government remains committed to providing timely humanitarian assistance to citizens affected by disasters, stressing that the relief materials were intended to cushion the immediate impact and aid recovery.
“These items cannot fully compensate for losses incurred but are meant to provide succour and restore hope to affected persons,” she said.
She further emphasised the role of collaboration among stakeholders, including the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), in ensuring a transparent and efficient distribution process.
Beneficiaries were advised to make judicious use of the materials, while residents were urged to adopt stricter fire safety practices to prevent future incidents.
Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, who represented Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, commended the Federal Government for its continued support in emergency situations.
He stressed the importance of enforcing building regulations, improving environmental management, and adhering to fire safety standards to mitigate similar disasters.
Community leaders present at the event expressed appreciation for the intervention and pledged to work with authorities to strengthen preventive measures against fire outbreaks.
Items distributed included food supplies and essential non-food materials aimed at addressing the immediate needs of affected victims.
NEMA reiterated its commitment to enhancing disaster preparedness, response and resilience nationwide.
