DSTG Set to Fight Examination Malpractices

By Oye Chijioke.

Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Dr. Tony Nwaka has charged teachers in the state not to compromise the confidentiality of test items generated as the fight against examination malpractice was still in force.

Dr. Nwaka, accompanied by the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Julie Akinmoyewa, Directors and the Chief Inspectors of Education, stated this while declaring open a six-day workshop on Generation of Test Items for 2015 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for JSS 3 students and Cognitive/Placement Examinations for Primary Six Pupils at St. Patrick’s College, Asaba.

The Commissioner pointed out that the workshop which marked the commencement of the preparations for the examinations, was also targeted at reviewing past evaluative instruments, with a view to generating new ones that would enrich the question bank of the Ministry, so as to adequately and effectively assess the candidates for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and the Cognitive/Placement Examinations.

Dr. Nwaka equally called on the teachers to use their knowledge and experience to cover the three domains of learning, as well as ensure that the test items were improved upon; valid and reliable to meet established standards.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Director of Examinations and Standards, Dr. Prince Akporugo enjoined the teachers not to betray the confidence reposed in them, and to adhere to existing standards, as any deviation from ethics, integrity and credibility will not augur well for the development of education in Delta State.

Papers were presented on General Considerations in Writing Test Items (Essay or Objective Items) by Dr. John Odili; and Making School-based Cognitive Tests Valid and Reliable by Dr. Ochuko Nabofa, both from the Delta State University, Abraka.
