AWKA/Nigeria: Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has declared that the existence of more than one traditional ruler in a community is a violation of Igbo customs and traditions, insisting that dual kingship remains an abomination in Igbo land.
Soludo made the declaration during a solidarity visit to the traditional ruler of Awka, Obi Gibson Nwosu, as part of activities marking the annual Imo Awka Festival.
The governor used the occasion to reaffirm his administration’s commitment to peace, unity and sustained infrastructural development in the Anambra State capital.
Describing himself as the first serving governor of the state to pay homage to the Awka monarch during the festival, Soludo stressed that unified leadership remained critical to the growth and stability of the community.
Addressing a gathering that included the Traditional Prime Minister of Awka, the President-General of the town union and members of the Ọzọ Awka society, the governor declared that peace had returned to the state capital.
“In Igbo tradition, it is a taboo for one community to have two kings,” Soludo stated, while urging residents to sustain the prevailing peace and support initiatives aimed at advancing the development of Awka.
He described himself as a leader committed to peace and assured the people that his administration remained focused on rebuilding and transforming the state capital.
As part of efforts to preserve the cultural heritage and strengthen traditional institutions in Awka, Soludo announced plans by the state government to construct a central palace that would serve the community for generations.
He called on residents to collaborate with the government in bringing the vision to reality.
Speaking on the cultural and religious significance of the Imo Awka Festival, the governor said the state recognised and respected all faiths, assuring that freedom of worship remained guaranteed under his administration.
According to him, adherents of traditional religion should be allowed to practise their customs freely, just as Christians should celebrate their faith peacefully and harmoniously.
Soludo commended the President-General of Awka and members of the Ọzọ Awka title society for ensuring that this year’s festival was peaceful and devoid of security challenges.
Earlier, President-General of Awka, Chief Fred Chinwuba, praised the governor for his peace-building efforts and developmental projects across the state, particularly within Awka.
Also speaking, the Traditional Prime Minister of the community, Mr Benjamin Okoye, pledged the continued support of the people of Awka to the Soludo administration.
