BENIN-CITY/Nigeria: The enduring influence of alumni leadership and the power of mentorship took centre stage at the University of Benin’s N100 Billion Development Trust Fund Launch and Fundraising Gala on Saturday, as former Lagos State Governor and Minister of Works, Babatunde Raji Fashola, SAN, paid glowing tribute to former President of the University of Benin Alumni Association, Pharm. Paul O. Enebeli, and his son, Chukwudi Enebeli, SAN, describing their contributions as a remarkable example of generational excellence.

Speaking as Chairman of the occasion at the event held at the Main Auditorium of the University of Benin, Ugbowo, Benin City, Fashola said the Enebeli family’s longstanding relationship with the institution demonstrated how strong alumni engagement could inspire successive generations to serve society and give back to their alma mater.

The fundraising ceremony, which attracted prominent alumni, government officials, business leaders and friends of the university, was organised to mobilise resources towards the University’s ambitious N100 billion Development Trust Fund, aimed at strengthening infrastructure, research, innovation and academic excellence.

While acknowledging dignitaries at the event, Fashola reflected on his long-standing relationship with Pharm. Paul Enebeli, whom he described as both a friend and a brother, noting that beyond their personal bond, they also shared a common identity as alumni of the University of Benin.

He recalled that Pharm. Enebeli had previously served as President of the University’s Alumni Association, leaving behind a legacy of committed service to the institution.

Drawing applause from the audience, Fashola highlighted what he described as the continuation of that legacy through the next generation, recalling that many years ago, when he visited the University to support the Faculty of Law, Chukwudi Enebeli was then serving as President of the Law Students’ Association.

According to him, the young student leader has since risen through the legal profession to become a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), a journey he said reflects the value of leadership cultivated within the university community.

Fashola said the story of the Enebeli family symbolised the continuity that binds generations of University of Benin graduates together, where the achievements of one generation inspire and prepare the next for greater responsibilities.

He noted that such enduring connections underscore the importance of alumni participation in the growth and development of the institution, expressing optimism that future generations of the family and other alumni would continue the tradition of leadership and service.

“So that is the generational connection that binds all of those who come here today together,” Fashola remarked while reflecting on the family’s contributions to the University.

The former governor’s remarks resonated with many participants at the fundraising gala, reinforcing the central message of the event—that the continued progress of the University of Benin depends not only on financial contributions but also on the commitment of its alumni to preserve the institution’s legacy and invest in its future.

The University of Benin N100 Billion Development Trust Fund is expected to mobilise support from alumni, corporate organisations, philanthropists and development partners to finance strategic projects that will enhance teaching, research, innovation, infrastructure and global competitiveness.
