ASABA/Nigeria: Delta State has launched a fresh drive to tackle electricity transmission constraints that have for years limited stable power supply to homes and businesses, despite the state’s significant electricity generation potential, in a move aimed at strengthening infrastructure and accelerating industrial growth.

The Commissioner for Energy, Michael Anoka, disclosed the initiative while leading a high-level technical delegation on an assessment tour of facilities operated by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) in Sapele, Warri and Ughelli. He said the exercise aligns with Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s MORE Agenda to build a more resilient power sector capable of supporting the state’s economic aspirations.

According to Anoka, the visit focused on identifying critical transmission bottlenecks, improving grid stability and developing practical measures that will deliver more reliable electricity to industrial hubs, commercial centres and residential communities across the state.

He said the delegation conducted a comprehensive assessment of key transmission infrastructure and reached an understanding with TCN on collaborative interventions designed to strengthen the electricity transmission network.

The commissioner noted that Delta’s substantial power generation capacity can only translate into sustainable economic growth if the transmission system is strengthened to evacuate and distribute electricity efficiently to consumers.

He said the Oborevwori administration remains committed to technical reforms that will deepen industrialisation, reduce the cost of doing business and improve the living conditions of residents through a more dependable electricity supply.

“Through this structured engagement with the Transmission Company of Nigeria, we are systematically removing transmission constraints that have historically limited efficient power distribution,” Anoka said.

During the inspection, the delegation visited the Warri 132kV Transmission Station, a strategic facility expected to boost electricity supply to Effurun, Osubi, Ovwian/Orerokpe, Uvwie, Udu and adjoining communities when fully integrated into the transmission network.

The team also toured the TCN Delta Sub-Region office in Ughelli, where Assistant Manager Ken Chukwuemeka led members of the delegation through the Afiesere Transmission Station and highlighted ongoing efforts to improve the reliability and efficiency of the transmission system.

The assessment tour forms part of Delta State’s broader strategy to modernise its electricity infrastructure by addressing transmission deficiencies that have constrained power distribution. Government officials believe the planned interventions will not only improve electricity supply but also create a stronger foundation for investment, industrial expansion and long-term socio-economic development across the state.
