ASABA/Nigeria: The Delta State Police Command has condemned in strong terms a viral video showing officers attached to ‘C’ Division, Asaba, allegedly collecting money from a motorist using a Point of Sale (POS) machine within the station, describing the act as unprofessional, embarrassing, and a gross violation of police ethics.
The Command, in a statement, said the incident, which occurred on January 13, 2026, does not reflect the standards expected of police personnel, stressing that no citizen deserves to be treated in such a degrading manner by officers entrusted with upholding the law.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer of the Command, SP Bright Edafe, the conduct of the officers involved is “inexcusable and unpardonable,” reaffirming the Command’s zero tolerance for extortion and abuse of office.
The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, was said to have aligned fully with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc (+), NPM, which expressly prohibits extortion as well as the use of POS machines or any electronic payment platforms within police formations.
The CP emphasised that no officer is authorised to demand or receive money from any member of the public under any guise, warning that such misconduct would attract strict disciplinary measures.
The Command disclosed that an orderly room trial of the officers involved—Inspector Augustine Jeremiah and Corporal Miracle Ehirim—has commenced, assuring that the outcome of the disciplinary process would be made public upon conclusion.
Reiterating his stance, the Commissioner of Police reminded officers and men of the Command that acts of extortion and abuse of office would not be tolerated under his leadership, urging them to conduct their duties with professionalism and respect for the rights of citizens.
He further charged personnel to uphold the tenets of professional policing in line with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), noting that the action taken against the erring officers would serve as a deterrent to others.
The Command also commended members of the public who brought the incident to light, encouraging citizens to continue reporting cases of police misconduct through its Complaint Response Unit via 09155570008 and 09011112311.
It reaffirmed its commitment to discipline, accountability, and rebuilding public trust in the Nigeria Police Force.
