ASABA/Nigeria: Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, is expected to declare open the seventh edition of the Delta State Strategic Communication Workshop (DELCOM 2026) in Asaba on Tuesday, August 18, as the state moves to strengthen the capacity of government communication personnel to respond to emerging challenges in the digital environment.
The three-day workshop, scheduled to hold at Hotel Benizia, Asaba, will bring together media aides, information officers, public relations practitioners and other communication personnel working across ministries, departments and agencies of the Delta State Government.
The 2026 edition is themed, “DIGITAL COMMUNICATION AND CRISIS MANAGEMENT: BUILDING TRUST AND CREDIBILITY FOR DEMOCRATIC GOVERNANCE.”
State Coordinator of DELCOM and Director-General of the Delta State Bureau for Orientation and Communications, Olorogun Fred Latimore Oghenesivbe, Esq., said the workshop was designed to strengthen the professional capacity of government communicators and improve the way public institutions engage with citizens.
Oghenesivbe said the rapid growth of digital platforms, artificial intelligence, misinformation and other changes in the media environment had made continuous professional development increasingly important for communication practitioners.
According to him, DELCOM has developed into a capacity-building platform for media aides to the Governor, information officers, public relations officers and other government communication personnel across the state.
He said the 2026 programme would focus on practical skills that participants could apply in their day-to-day responsibilities, including digital communication, strategic media relations, reputation and crisis management, peace journalism, public information management and effective message development.
Oghenesivbe said the workshop would also provide opportunities for participants to exchange professional experiences, learn from one another and examine emerging approaches to communicating government policies and programmes in an increasingly digital environment.
Communication scholars and practitioners, including Professor Presley Obukadata, Professor Joyce Ogwezi and Dr. Rita Abamba, are expected to serve as resource persons during the workshop.
The DELCOM coordinator said the facilitators were selected for their experience and expertise, adding that the practical orientation of the sessions would help participants improve their ability to communicate responsibly and effectively.
He described the workshop as part of the state’s efforts to strengthen human capacity within its communication structure, particularly at a time when public institutions are increasingly required to respond quickly to changing information cycles and public expectations.
The Honourable Commissioner for Works (Rural) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, will serve as Chief Host of the 2026 edition.
Oghenesivbe commended Governor Oborevwori for approving and supporting the seventh edition, saying sustained investment in the professional development of government communicators would contribute to more effective public engagement and institutional communication.
He expressed confidence that DELCOM 2026 would equip participants with additional knowledge and practical tools for managing digital communication, responding to crises and strengthening public trust.
The workshop is expected to run for three days, from Tuesday, August 18, to Thursday, August 20, 2026, in Asaba.
