AWKA/Nigeria: Wife of the Anambra State Governor, Dr. Nonye Soludo, has called on Nigerians to embrace compassion, kindness and humanitarian service as vital tools for building a more united and resilient society.

Dr. Soludo made the appeal on Friday in Awka in a message marking the 2026 World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day, where she paid glowing tribute to humanitarian workers and volunteers across the world for their sacrifices in serving vulnerable communities.

The annual event, celebrated every May 8, honours the founder of the International Red Cross Movement, Henry Dunant, and recognises the dedication of volunteers and humanitarian workers committed to alleviating human suffering and promoting respect for humanity globally.

This year’s celebration is themed, “United in Humanity.”

In her statement, the Governor’s wife described compassion as one of the most powerful forces capable of healing divisions, restoring hope and strengthening communities during difficult times.

“On this World Red Cross Day, we are reminded that compassion remains one of the greatest forces for healing and unity,” she stated.

She commended members of the Nigerian Red Cross Society and the global International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement for their courage, selflessness and unwavering commitment to humanitarian service.

According to her, the organisation has continued to stand as a symbol of hope through disaster response, healthcare support and critical humanitarian interventions in times of crisis and emergencies.

“From disaster response to healthcare support and crucial humanitarian interventions, the Red Cross continues to stand for compassion, dignity and service to humanity,” she said.

Dr. Soludo noted that the sacrifices made daily by humanitarian workers and volunteers continue to provide relief and hope to individuals and families facing hardship across different parts of the world.

She urged residents of Anambra State and Nigerians generally to imbibe the spirit of humanity by extending love, care and support to vulnerable persons within their communities.

The Governor’s wife further stressed that collective acts of compassion and service would help create a safer, stronger and more caring society for all.

She maintained that genuine concern for humanity remains essential to achieving peaceful coexistence and sustainable social development.
