LAGOS/Nigeria: A retired Director, Lagos State Ministry of Education, Mrs Oziyi Modupe, has urged school administrators to introduce competent residential hostel masters and mistresses to manage students activities in the dormitories.
Modupe disclosed this in an interview on Friday in Lagos, while reacting to reports of incessant bullying in schools.
She said that employment of competent hostel masters and mistresses would ensure effective monitoring of students and their activities for safety.
“It is fundamental for school authorities to put both students and hostel personnel on their toes by checking their activities, particularly in dormitories.
“The hostel masters and mistress must possess qualities that will make the students have confidence in them and be able to open up on any issue.
“Whistle blowing should also be introduced and the awareness must be there because it will come in handy to escalate any unpleasant issue to the authorities,’’ she said.
Modupe added that proper counselling should be given to students to open up on their welfare issues, intimidation from mates and academic challenges.
She appealed to the school authorities to provide functional medical facilities and qualified personnel to guard against any eventuality.
Modupe also called for adequate sporting facilities, conducive reading environment and night prep, adding that students should be made to observe siesta.
