ABUJA/Nigeria: In a compelling showdown at the Azam Sports Complex in Dar es Salaam on Sunday, the U20 girls of Nigeria and Tanzania battled fiercely to a 1-1 draw, marking the first leg of their 2024 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup African qualifying series second-round fixture.
After a goalless first half, the equilibrium was disrupted three minutes before the hour mark, courtesy of substitute Chioma Olise, who propelled Nigeria into the lead. However, the home team responded emphatically 13 minutes later, as Asnath Ubamba found the back of the net from a free kick, leaving Nigeria’s goalkeeper Anderlin Mgebchi without a response.
Despite both teams giving their all on the artificial turf, the scoreline remained unchanged. The Falconets now head back to Nigeria with high expectations, gearing up to face the Tanzanian challenge once more in the second leg scheduled for Sunday, 19th November.
