Acting Delta Governor Onyeme Hails Music as a Universal Language

ASABA/Nigeria: The Acting Governor of Delta State, Sir Monday Onyeme, has described music as a universal language that transcends cultural and linguistic barriers, uniting people from diverse backgrounds. Onyeme made this statement on Wednesday during the International Festival for Choral and Traditional Music held in Asaba, the state capital.

Speaking at the event, Onyeme highlighted the power of music to connect individuals and mobilize people toward common goals. He noted that Asaba was an ideal host for the festival, given Delta State’s rich musical history and its role as a hub for the entertainment industry.

“Delta State is home to many legendary musicians and entertainers,” Onyeme said, citing icons such as Edna Ogholi, Harrysong, Omawumi, and the late Ras Kimono.

“On the gospel side, we have Samsong and the late Sammie Okposo. It may interest you to know that the Delta State government has enshrined in law a yearly Praise and Thanksgiving Day on May 29 to celebrate God’s blessings and faithfulness.”

Onyeme lauded the festival’s objectives, which promote cultural exchange, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence across Africa. He emphasized the role of the arts in educating young people, promoting African identity, and addressing social issues such as prostitution, hunger, disease, fraud, and greed.

“Asaba has become a preferred destination for conferences, sporting events, and international gatherings,” Onyeme added, underscoring the city’s growing prominence as a venue for major events.

The festival’s patron, Dr. Daniel Okoh, General Superintendent of Christ Holy Church International and President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), echoed Onyeme’s sentiments. Okoh called for greater unity among Africans, urging the use of choral music as a tool for building peace and fostering collaboration across the continent.

“We must use choral music to say that we need each other, and we must become champions of peace in Africa,” Okoh said.

The event featured performances by various choral and cultural groups from across Africa, showcasing the continent’s rich artistic heritage. One of the highlights was the presentation of an award to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori in recognition of his support for Christian-related events in Delta State.
