Soludo Calls for Progressive Alliance, Ethical Rebirth to Rebuild Nigeria

Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State

LAGOS/Nigeria: Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has urged Nigerians to embrace a progressive political realignment and ethical rebirth as the foundation for rebuilding the nation. Speaking at The Platform dialogue in Lagos to mark Democracy Day on June 12, 2025, Soludo, in a keynote address titled Rebuilding Our Nation, stressed that unity, ideological clarity, and a value-driven citizenry are essential for Nigeria’s renewal.

Soludo lamented the absence of clear ideologies in the country’s political space, describing the current environment as a “Nigerian Elite Plc” driven by opportunism rather than principles. He called for a return to ideologically rooted parties, similar to those of the Second and Third Republics, and proposed the formation of a new Progressive People’s Alliance (PPA) to unite parties with progressive credentials ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“The lack of ideological direction in our political parties is worrisome. We need an ethical and value rebirth among citizens, and a culture that rewards hard work and integrity over corruption and superstition,” Soludo said. “A Progressive People’s Alliance will provide a clear alternative to the status quo and drive transformative policies.”

While commending the economic policies of President Bola Tinubu’s administration and recent endorsements by institutions such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, Soludo challenged critics to offer constructive alternatives rather than mere rhetoric. He urged both leaders and citizens to rally around progressive ideals enshrined in the constitution by prioritising education, healthcare, the rule of law, and accountability.

Other speakers at the event echoed the call for reforms. President Ameenah Gurib-Fakim of Mauritius highlighted the pivotal role of education in national transformation. Former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega, stressed the urgency of electoral reforms and stronger democratic institutions. Former Minister of Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, underscored the rule of law as the bedrock of sustainable national development.
