ASABA/Nigeria: The Delta State Police Command has begun disciplinary procedures against a group of policemen captured on video assaulting a young man near Asaba Specialist Hospital, following widespread outrage over the viral footage. The incident, which occurred on Sunday, July 27, 2025, drew sharp condemnation from members of the public and forced a swift response from the police hierarchy.
In a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Edafe Bright, the Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, was said to have acted immediately upon receiving the video by ordering the identification and arrest of the officers involved. The men have since been detained at the Command headquarters, and preparations are underway for their orderly room trial. Their team leader, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), has also been issued a formal query.
CP Abaniwonda condemned the act, describing it as unacceptable and not reflective of the values of the Delta State Command. He assured the public that the erring officers would be punished in line with the provisions of the Police Act and regulations. “It is not in the character of the Command to trample on the rights of citizens or assault members of the public. Such conduct will not be tolerated under my leadership,” he stated.
The Police Commissioner further urged officers to maintain professionalism and uphold the rights of all Nigerians as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution. He also appealed to the public to remain calm, assuring them that justice would be served.
