WARRI/Nigeria: In a renewed push to reposition Delta State as a hub for sports development, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori on Saturday inspected the ongoing reconstruction of the historic Warri Township Stadium, expressing satisfaction with the quality and pace of work. The visit underscores his administration’s commitment to upgrading sports infrastructure across the state in line with the MORE Agenda.
Speaking with journalists after the inspection, Governor Oborevwori reaffirmed his confidence in the capacity of Peculiar Concern Limited, the project contractor, to deliver a world-class stadium within the stipulated timeline. He noted that over 176 youths had already gained employment on the site, emphasizing the economic impact of the project even before its completion. “We are confident that the contractor will deliver on time. Warri residents are already benefitting, and when completed, this stadium will make them proud,” the governor said.
The facility, which includes a FIFA-standard football pitch, Olympic-size swimming pool, underground drainage system, and a new indoor sports hall, is undergoing a comprehensive overhaul. Oborevwori disclosed that although the original plan was to construct a new stadium, space constraints in the area necessitated a full-scale renovation of the existing structure. He also revealed plans to incorporate a hospitality suite to complement the modern design.
Engr. Olaruwaju Adeleke, representative of Peculiar Concern Limited, assured the governor and residents that the project is on course for completion. He disclosed that all steelwork for the main bowl had been fabricated and installed, with work on the pitch and running track expected to be completed by December. While noting that the stadium may not host matches in the upcoming Premier League season, Adeleke said it will be ready for Warri Wolves’ return to their home ground next season, marking a new era for sports and entertainment in the region.
