ASABA/Nigeria; The Nigerian Senate has ordered an immediate investigation and comprehensive rehabilitation of the Ujevwu–Itakpe rail corridor following a motion sponsored by Senator Ede Dafinone (Delta Central), who raised alarm over frequent derailments, service disruptions, and mounting safety concerns on the strategic national rail line.
Speaking on the floor of the Senate on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, Senator Dafinone described the deteriorating condition of the Ujevwu–Itakpe Train Line as a grave threat to passenger safety and national economic growth. He called for “urgent intervention, full rehabilitation, and the implementation of stronger safety measures to protect lives and safeguard this critical infrastructure.”
The Ujevwu–Itakpe rail line, which links the South-South region through Delta State to the North-Central corridor, remains one of Nigeria’s key transportation arteries for passengers, goods, and industrial materials. Dafinone lamented that the poor maintenance of the route and recurring derailments have not only endangered lives but also disrupted supply chains vital to national productivity and economic stability.
“The deterioration of this rail corridor has caused untold hardship to commuters and serious economic losses,” Dafinone stated. “We must act swiftly to restore efficiency, improve maintenance systems, and strengthen operational safety.”
He further urged the Federal Government to extend the rail line from Itakpe to Abuja to achieve full national rail connectivity and enhance seamless passenger and cargo movement across regions. According to him, such expansion would boost trade, foster industrialization, and reinforce the federal government’s vision for integrated national transport infrastructure.
After extensive deliberations, the Senate unanimously adopted the motion, directing immediate repairs of vandalized tracks, a detailed investigation into Nigeria’s rail infrastructure, and consideration of the proposed Itakpe–Abuja extension.
Senator Dafinone commended his colleagues for the bipartisan support and described the resolution as a demonstration of the Senate’s commitment to a safer, modern, and efficient rail system that will accelerate economic growth and national development.
“A reliable and efficient railway network remains central to Nigeria’s industrialization and regional integration efforts,” Dafinone added. “Our focus must be on building and maintaining transport infrastructure that meets international safety and operational standards.”
