LAGOS/Nigeria: The Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 2 Command, Mr. Adegoke Fayoade, has praised officers for their outstanding performance at the recently concluded 15th Biennial Police Games (BIPOGA 2026) held in Asaba.
Fayoade gave the commendation on Thursday during a reception organised at the Command Headquarters in Onikan, Lagos, to welcome the sports contingent that secured second overall position at the national competition.
Describing the feat as a significant achievement, he said it reflected the dedication of both the athletes and the management team, noting that Zone 2 competed strongly against commands from across the country.
“The competition initially appeared daunting, raising concerns about preparedness. However, the team rose above the challenges and made the command proud.
“You performed excellently and made us very proud. You are the real champions,” he said.
The DIG noted that the performance reinforced the Nigeria Police’s long-standing tradition of producing elite athletes who have gone on to represent the country at national and international levels.
He recalled previous police sporting events in Ibadan and Asaba which produced athletes who later excelled in global competitions, adding that police personnel consistently distinguish themselves whenever Nigeria participates in major sporting events.
Fayoade expressed appreciation to the former Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, for sustaining police sporting initiatives, stressing that organising such large-scale competitions requires strong leadership.
He also thanked the Commissioners of Police in Lagos and Ogun States, along with other senior officers, for providing logistical and financial support that ensured the safety and welfare of the athletes.
The DIG further commended the Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, DCP Olubode Fakeye, for his leadership and mentorship throughout the games, which he said boosted the morale of participants.
Looking ahead, he urged the athletes and management team to begin early preparations for the next edition of the biennial games scheduled for 2028.
Fayoade congratulated the team for their resilience and dedication despite stiff competition and encouraged them to continue striving for excellence.
In his welcome remarks, Fakeye also lauded the athletes for their determination, noting that Zone 2 competed against strong contenders, including Force Headquarters.
He disclosed that Zone 2 secured 90 gold medals compared to Force Headquarters’ 103, finishing second overall despite winning 79 silver and 77 bronze medals.
Fakeye explained that the final ranking was determined by the number of gold medals won, which ultimately placed Zone 2 behind Force Headquarters.
He credited the team’s success to Fayoade’s leadership, including timely payment of allowances and effective logistical coordination, expressing confidence that with sustained preparation, Zone 2 could clinch the top position at the next BIPOGA.
