LAGOS/Nigeria: The Zone 2 Police Command and China’s Shandong Provincial Public Security Department have strengthened bilateral security cooperation with renewed commitments to tackle cybercrime, boost intelligence sharing and expand collaboration against transnational criminal networks.

The renewed partnership was reaffirmed on Thursday during a courtesy visit by a Chinese delegation to the Zone 2 Police Command headquarters in Onikan, Lagos. The delegation was led by the Deputy Director-General of the Shandong Provincial Public Security Department, Mr. Zhang Yuebo.

Speaking during the visit, Yuebo reiterated China’s commitment to strengthening law enforcement ties with the Nigeria Police Force through joint training programmes, intelligence exchange and coordinated security initiatives.

According to him, both institutions had established formal cooperation since the signing of an exchange and cooperation agreement in 2019, which has since facilitated several capacity-building programmes for Nigerian police officers.

He said the latest engagement was aimed at consolidating existing ties while deepening collaboration in combating cybercrime, transnational criminal activities and other emerging security threats.

“We are committed to deepening cooperation with the Nigeria Police Force through training, intelligence sharing and joint security initiatives,” Yuebo stated, while emphasizing the need to ensure the safety of Chinese businesses and personnel operating in Nigeria as both countries continue to strengthen economic and cultural relations.

Responding, Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 2 Command, Mr. Olohundare Jimoh, described the visit as another milestone in the growing security partnership between Nigeria and China.

Jimoh recalled that the relationship dates back to 2019 when retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Lawal Shehu, participated in a training programme at the Shandong Police College, noting that the collaboration had continued to yield positive outcomes through regular exchanges and professional development initiatives.

He disclosed that in 2025, no fewer than 17 senior officers of Zone 2 Command participated in a two-week public security training programme in Jinan City, China, under the leadership of Deputy Commissioner of Police, Olubode Fakeye, of the Zonal Criminal Investigation Department.

According to the AIG, the training significantly enhanced operational efficiency and strengthened service delivery within the Nigeria Police Force.

He described China as a strategic partner in global development and security cooperation, commending the Shandong authorities for their advances in technological policing and crime prevention strategies.

Jimoh noted that the partnership would further open opportunities in cybercrime prevention, counter-terrorism operations, forensic investigation, technological policing and transnational crime detection.

He added that personnel development, intelligence gathering and police training remained key areas expected to benefit from the renewed cooperation.

The AIG further stated that the Nigeria Police Force, under the leadership of Olatunji Disu, remains committed to intelligence-driven and community-based policing, anchored on professionalism, technology and international collaboration.

He stressed that Zone 2 Command, which covers Lagos and Ogun States, occupies a strategic security position because of the economic significance of both states and expressed optimism that the strengthened alliance would deepen institutional cooperation between both countries.
