ABUJA/Nigeria: The Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria (BON) has urged the Federal Government to establish an inter-ministerial committee to support preparations for the 2026 World Public Relations Forum (WPRF), saying the global event presents an opportunity to strengthen Nigeria’s image on the international stage.
The call was made by the Chairman of BON, Senior High Chief Tony Akiotu, when the leadership of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) paid a courtesy visit to the organisation in Abuja.
Akiotu described Nigeria’s successful bid to host the 2026 edition of the World Public Relations Forum as a significant achievement for both the country and the African continent, noting that the event should be treated as a national project rather than the responsibility of the NIPR alone.
According to him, the proposed committee should comprise relevant ministries and government agencies that would work alongside the institute in planning and delivering the week-long international conference.
He said the forum offers Nigeria a unique platform to project a more accurate image of the country, challenge negative perceptions and showcase its investment opportunities, business environment and cultural strengths to a global audience.
Akiotu stressed that the opportunity should not be taken lightly, adding that a coordinated government approach would help ensure the successful hosting of the event and reinforce Nigeria’s reputation among international stakeholders.
The BON chairman also pledged the support of broadcasting organisations across the country, assuring that member stations would provide extensive media coverage before and throughout the event.
He disclosed that BON members would actively participate in the forum, which is scheduled to hold from November 15 to 21, 2026.
Earlier, President and Chairman of Council of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Dr. Ike Neliaku, said the visit was part of efforts to deepen the longstanding relationship between the institute and BON while exploring new areas of collaboration.
Neliaku noted that closer cooperation between both organisations would enhance strategic communication efforts aimed at promoting Nigeria’s image and strengthening the country’s reputation among domestic and international audiences.
The 2026 World Public Relations Forum, which has President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as Chief Host, is expected to attract communication professionals, policymakers, academics and industry leaders from across the world to discuss emerging issues in public relations, reputation management and global communication.
