ASABA/Nigeria: President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has thrown his weight behind the creation of Anioma State, declaring that the proposed state will have Asaba as its capital, while affirming that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains committed to seeing the initiative through.

Akpabio made the declaration on Wednesday in Asaba while addressing party faithful at the South-South Zonal Congress of the All Progressives Congress (APC), a high-powered political gathering that drew governors and key stakeholders from across the region.

In a significant expansion of the restructuring narrative, the Senate President further indicated that Warri would serve as the capital of a restructured Delta State, citing its strategic advantages, including the presence of an airport, major oil and gas installations, seaports, and other critical administrative and economic infrastructure.

The congress witnessed the presence of governors from the six South-South states—Delta, Edo, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Cross River—alongside a broad coalition of party leaders and stakeholders, underscoring the regional significance of the deliberations.

Describing the agitation for Anioma State as historically grounded and compelling, Akpabio said the demand reflects a legitimate quest for equity, administrative balance, and inclusive development within the Nigerian federation.

He noted that the proposal, championed by Senator Ned Nwoko, has continued to receive sustained legislative attention, adding that it remains one of the top priorities of the 10th Senate under his leadership.

According to him, the creation of Anioma State would unlock new socio-economic opportunities, deepen governance at the grassroots, and enhance administrative efficiency by effectively splitting Delta State into two viable entities.

“Anioma State will be created, with Asaba as its capital. The Senate fully supports the initiative spearheaded by Senator Ned Nwoko. This step will usher in a new era of development and shared prosperity for all constituent communities. With Asaba as Anioma State capital, Warri will be the capital of the new Delta,” Akpabio stated.

He further called on the people of the South-South to remain united and resolute, urging continued support for President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which he said is designed to foster national cohesion, economic growth, and improved living standards for Nigerians.

Speaking with journalists on the sidelines of the congress, Senator Ned Nwoko described the agitation for Anioma State as a collective and patriotic pursuit driven by the aspirations of the people.

The lawmaker commended the people of Delta North, members of the National Assembly, and other critical stakeholders for their unwavering support, pledging to sustain the momentum until the objective of state creation is achieved.
