ASABA/Nigeria: The Delta State Police Command on Tuesday staged a symbolic 5km Walkathon in Asaba to commemorate 70 years of Nigerian women in the Police Force and to intensify public advocacy against Gender-Based Violence (GBV). The event was announced in a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, Delta State Command, SP Bright Edafe.
Held under the leadership of the Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, the walk drew female officers from various divisions, male allies, partner organisations, and members of the public, all marching in solidarity with survivors of GBV and honouring the contributions of women to policing since 1955.
According to the statement, the Commissioner of Police and senior officers reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to gender-responsive policing, improved support systems for survivors, and the diligent prosecution of offenders involved in domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, and related abuses. They described the 70-year milestone as a testament to the resilience, leadership, and professional excellence of generations of women who have shaped policing and national security.
CP Abaniwonda commended female officers for their dedication to crime prevention, investigations, community engagement, and victim support across Delta State. He emphasised that tackling Gender-Based Violence remains a priority for the Command and urged residents to speak out, report incidents, and cooperate fully with law enforcement.
The Command further reiterated its commitment to protecting vulnerable groups and strengthening partnerships with stakeholders to eradicate GBV in all forms.
