Fubara Withdraws from APC Governorship Primary, Cites Peace and Unity

Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State

PORT HARCOURT/Nigeria: Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has withdrawn from the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary in the state, saying the decision was taken in the interest of peace, stability and unity.

Fubara announced his withdrawal in a personally signed statement on Wednesday, describing the move as difficult but necessary after what he termed deep reflection and extensive consultations with family members, friends and political associates.

The governor said he remained committed to the APC and would support whoever emerges as the party’s governorship candidate.

According to him, leadership demands sacrifice and personal ambition must sometimes give way to the collective interest of the people.

“Rivers State is bigger than any individual, and at this critical moment, the peace, stability, and unity of our dear state must take precedence over every personal interest,” Fubara stated.

He expressed appreciation to his supporters for their loyalty, sacrifices, prayers and unwavering support throughout the political process, while acknowledging that many of them would be disappointed by his decision.

Fubara explained that his silence in recent times was intentional and guided by the larger interest of the state.

“My silence over this period was deliberate and strategic, guided always by the higher interest of our state and our people,” he said.

The governor also hinted at underlying pressures surrounding the political process, suggesting that certain realities were deliberately kept away from public discourse.

“As our elders say, not everything a hunter sees in the forest is spoken of in the marketplace,” he stated.

He added that some truths are better borne quietly “not out of fear, but out of wisdom and restraint for the sake of peace and a greater purpose.”

Fubara said despite the challenges and difficult choices encountered, his commitment to Rivers State remained unwavering.

The governor thanked the leadership of the APC for the opportunity and support extended to him during the process.

He also expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as encouragement and support.

“The APC remains our collective home, and I urge all party faithful and supporters to remain steadfast and committed as we continue to build a stronger and more united future together,” he said.

Fubara, however, insisted that his withdrawal should not be interpreted as defeat, weakness or surrender.

“I stepped aside not out of weakness, fear, or surrender, but out of conviction and sacrifice so that Rivers State may move forward in peace and unity,” he declared.

The governor reaffirmed his commitment to continue serving the people of Rivers State until the expiration of his tenure.
