ASABA/Nigeria: Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has intervened decisively to resolve the industrial dispute that disrupted services at the Delta State University Teaching Hospital (DELSUTH), Oghara, while approving immediate measures to restore stable electricity and commence a comprehensive upgrade of the state’s foremost tertiary healthcare facility.

The governor’s intervention followed a high-level meeting with the management of the teaching hospital in Asaba, where he addressed the issues responsible for the industrial unrest and approved strategic actions aimed at improving healthcare delivery and strengthening critical infrastructure at the institution.

The Chief Medical Director of DELSUTH, Prof. Harrison Abedi, disclosed that Governor Oborevwori personally convened the meeting after receiving reports of the growing industrial tension and operational challenges confronting the hospital.

According to him, the governor’s swift intervention not only paved the way for resolving the labour-related issues but also provided lasting solutions to some of the hospital’s longstanding infrastructural challenges.

Prof. Abedi described the governor’s response as timely and reassuring, saying it restored confidence among management and staff while demonstrating the administration’s commitment to quality healthcare delivery.

One of the key decisions reached at the meeting was the immediate restoration of reliable electricity to the hospital following weeks of power outages that had adversely affected medical services, water supply and other essential operations.

To address the challenge, Governor Oborevwori directed the prompt implementation of a government-approved power intervention, with the Ministry of Energy already mobilised to execute the project.

As part of the intervention, government approved the installation of a dedicated high-capacity transformer that will provide DELSUTH with an independent electricity supply, significantly reducing the persistent power disruptions that have affected the institution.

Prof. Abedi confirmed that the new high-tension transformer was already being transported from Lagos for immediate installation.

“We have been assured that the power challenge will soon be permanently resolved. The governor has taken personal interest in the matter, and the Ministry of Energy is already on site implementing the intervention,” he said.

Beyond addressing the immediate electricity crisis, the governor also directed the hospital management to work closely with the Commissioner for Health to develop a comprehensive rehabilitation and modernisation plan for the institution.

The proposed intervention is expected to focus on upgrading ageing infrastructure, expanding healthcare facilities, improving service delivery and positioning DELSUTH to better meet the growing healthcare needs of Deltans.

Hospital management expressed optimism that the governor’s intervention would also facilitate an amicable resolution of the industrial dispute, paving the way for the suspension of the ongoing strike and the full restoration of medical services.

Prof. Abedi commended Governor Oborevwori for his hands-on approach to governance, noting that his direct involvement had brought renewed hope to the institution at a critical period.

According to him, the governor’s prompt response demonstrates his administration’s commitment to strengthening the state’s healthcare system under the M.O.R.E. Agenda.

The intervention has been widely welcomed within the hospital community, with expectations that the combined resolution of labour concerns, restoration of stable electricity and planned infrastructural renewal will significantly improve healthcare delivery and reposition DELSUTH as one of Nigeria’s leading tertiary medical institutions.

Governor Oborevwori’s latest intervention underscores his administration’s resolve to respond swiftly to challenges affecting critical public institutions, ensuring that healthcare services remain efficient, accessible and capable of meeting the needs of the people of Delta State.
