LAGOS/Nigeria: Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has described the widow of the late Admiral Augustus Aikhomu, Rebecca Aikhomu, as an embodiment of patience, humility, selfless service and generosity, whose life remains a testament to faith and character.
The governor gave the commendation on Friday during a service of commendation and Holy Communion held in her honour at the Cathedral Church of the Pentecost, Festac Town. Sanwo-Olu was represented at the service by the Secretary to the Lagos State Government, Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, Rebecca Aikhomu, who was born on August 4, 1940, passed away on December 11, 2025, at the age of 85. A former officer of the Nigerian Army, she retired with the rank of Captain after a distinguished career in service.
Sanwo-Olu said the late Captain Aikhomu lived a life that demonstrated that true greatness was not defined by power or position, but by values upheld and lives impacted. He noted that her character and consistency offered a powerful example to younger generations, especially women, on the virtues of faith, discipline and service. He prayed for the repose of her soul, describing her legacy as one that would continue to inspire.
In his sermon, the Bishop of the Diocese of Lagos South West, Anglican Communion, Rt Rev Ebenezer Adewole, said the deceased lived a life of unwavering commitment to God and humanity. He recalled her dedication to charitable causes, narrating how she once postponed a scheduled episcopal visit because she had gone out to attend to the needy. He added that her life reflected the core values of the Christian faith: transformation, spiritual growth and service.
Also speaking, the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Adm Idi Abbas, represented by Rear Admiral Ibrahim Shehu, described Rebecca Aikhomu as a pillar of support within the Nigerian Navy family and a former President of the Naval Officers’ Wives Association. He said she would be remembered for her wise counsel, deep knowledge of naval history and continued mentorship to successive NOWA leaders.
Speaking on behalf of the family, her eldest daughter, Susan, described her mother as a woman of inestimable value, whose life blended discipline with compassion. She said Rebecca Aikhomu was not only a mother but a mentor and friend, whose lessons on faith, service to humanity and love would remain indelible in the hearts of her children and all whose lives she touched.
