Senator Nwoko Meet, Urges Chief of Defence Staff for Release of Detained Monarch

ABUJA/Nigeria: In a bid to quell escalating tensions following the tragic killing of 17 soldiers in Okuama community, Senator Ned Nwoko representing Delta North senatorial district has met with the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa.

The primary agenda of their discussion was the release of His Royal Majesty, Clement Oghenerukevwe Ikolo, Urhukpe 1, traditional ruler of Ewu-Urhobo kingdom, who was detained in connection with the incident.

Accompanied by two other senators from Delta, Senator Nwoko emphasized the urgency of releasing the monarch, stating, “His continued detention risks exacerbating tensions within Delta.” Expressing deep concern over the tragedy, Nwoko called for calm and cooperation to address both the immediate and underlying issues.

The meeting also addressed other pressing matters, including the discovery of an illegal arms factory in Onicha-Olona community and the need for indigenous technological development. Furthermore, Senator Nwoko highlighted the necessity for the construction of new headquarters for the 63 Brigade in Delta state.

Meanwhile, the military has initiated a panel of inquiry to probe the circumstances surrounding the soldiers’ killings, allegedly by Okuama youths. The incident resulted in the reported sacking of the Delta community by security forces, further intensifying the region’s unrest.
